Julian Lynch - CD-R's galore!

julian lynch emailed me a few months back while i was still writing for cum horizon asking me to check out his tunes. we emailed back and forth a few times and he is one talented, down to earth guy. now, he's on his way to the top and is putting out some pertinent releases (his most recent is a split 7" with ducktails). i asked him in our email correspondence to give me a biographical summation as to what influenced his music and here's what he had to say. it's an interesting read.

"Alright here goes...what influenced those releases the most was growing up in suburban New Jersey; watching cartoons, reading comics, driving in the car with my dad and listening to New York's favorite oldies station, CBS FM. For better or worse, growing up on bands like the Four Seasons and the Beach Boys totally shaped my sense of musicality of what musical beauty is...and, like a lot of other people I think, my tastes in music as a teenager were kind of a reaction to that, so I ended up listening to a lot of hardcore and other music that was less melodious, but now I think remains an influence to me.

A lot of the people I was friends with since childhood in NJ started playing music, and we all would jam together from early high school to the present. Certainly those people changed the way I play/think about music: bands like Real Estate, Frat Dad, and many others. I also lived in DC for 5 years, and while I was there I worked for Smithsonian Folkways Recordings. I think that experience had a monstrous effect on the music I was making, because all of a sudden I had access to THOUSANDS of really interesting recordings from all over the world. Basically all I listened to for a year and a half was stuff I got from folkways. The recordings I was into the most were their Calypso recordings (most of which from a label called Cook Records that Smithsonian now owns) and recordings of South Asian music. Some of these were from the Folkways collection (mostly Hindustani classical music, to a lesser extent Indian/Pakistani folk music) but also this label called ARCE that Folkways also owns, which is dedicated to all sorts of Indian music and music from Indian diaspora communities (like Indo-Carribean music). Listening to all that definitely redirected my music and also my academic interests...now I'm a grad student in ethnomusicology studying Indian and Pakistani popular music. Ok sorry if this is getting too long and annoying to read, I just want to mention one other dude, his name is Gary Caruth. I spent a year in Scotland and that's where I met Gary. We became really good friends pretty fast, and played a ton of music together. We even went on a really crazy tour together. I completely reworked my approach to making music after playing with Gary, in many different ways. Anyways, I think I'll actually attach a song to this email that I recorded with him in Scotland, that we never really did anything with but I've covered myself a few different times, including (instrumentally) on the album I did called Born2Run. If you are interested, you can check it out. Its Gary's song really, I just played drums and keyboard on it. Gary has a bunch of music projects going, I think the most current is Sad City (http://www.myspace.com/sadcity)."

soon after, i purchased all his cd-r's and he gave me his upcoming record "orange you glad". after about 4 months of listening to it, i can say with confidence that it's one of my favorite releases of 2009 and it hasn't even been released yet! "orange you glad" is a collection of breezy songs brimming with reflective vocals and shimmering guitars. i hope you enjoy it as much as i do and i highly encourage you to purchase his stuff (link down below)

The Strange Boys - And Girls Club

i saw these texas boys open up for mika miko in the back of a pizza place in washington dc. i hadn't heard of them and i was impressed with what i saw. the strange boys play a barrage of fuzzy rock songs coupled with bluesy, catchy as fuck riffs and ryan sambol's vocals are definitely something to be admired. anyways, they have a lot going for them (which i can't say about all their label mates..) and i would definitely recommend seeing them live. they'll have you dancing in no time.

best coast is bethany (and bobb bruno) from now defunkt pocahaunted. this is lo-fi pop at it's best. it's reminiscent of lazy summer days spent in the sun that leaves you wanting more.. and maybe a dip in the pool. her most recent release "where the boys are" is a compilation of scuzzy, reverb drenched pop songs that are quite different from the likes of "sun was high (so was i)". however, i think you'll enjoy them none the less.
